Many Manchester United fans were pleased over the signing of former FC Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes in January 2015. He will likely be back-up to David De Gea who has been one of Manchester United’s best performing players over the course of the season so far. This will be unusual for Victor Valdes, who was Barcelona’s first choice for eleven years. A keeper with brilliant shot-stopping ability and distribution skills, Valdes was born on the 14th January 1982 in Catalonia, Valdes joined the FC Barcleona youth system aged 10. The young, eager goalkeeper however, had to leave and join Spanish side Tenerife, due to his family moving.
Fortunately for Victor, he rejoined the famous La Masia academy three years later. Progressing through the youth systems, Valdes reached the first team in 2002, and made his debut in the same year. After making 14 appearances in the 2002-03 season, he finally reached his mark and consolidated his place as first choice keeper in the following season. Success was earned for his hard work, as Valdes helped Barcelona win the first la liga title for six-years.
Even more glory came his way in 2005-06 as for the first time since 1992, FC Barcelona won the Uefa Champions league, after securing a 2-1 win over English side Arsenal in the final.
Real Madrid would win the la Liga for the next two seasons, leaving Barcelona despondent. In the 2008-09 season, former Barcelona defensive midfielder Pep Guardiola. This was match made in heaven as he led Barcelona to a fantastic treble, in which they won the la Liga, copa del Rey and the Uefa champions league. Valdes had a big part to play in this, keeping crucial clean sheets through out. Further success came later on, with another three league titles, a FIFA club World Cup title, and the copa del Rey. The Spanish national team has looked beyond Valdes throughout his career, as compatriot Iker Casillas has been ever-present since 2002.
Even though this is the case, Manchester United are lucky to have a goalkeeper of vast quality and experience.
